1st CMI Alumni Conference - Silver Jubilee Celebration

By CMIAA

About

CMI was established on October 10, 1989. As part of the year-long Silver Jubilee celebrations, a conference was organized at CMI where the speakers were alumni (former members and students). Various alumni of CMI who had established themselves in academia in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, and other related subjects gave talks at the conference.

It was held at the CMI campus from January 7-10, 2015 (Wednesday to Saturday). On the last day, there was the Annual General Body meeting of the CMI Alumni Association.

Aftermath

The alumni meet led to some amazing contributions that made a real difference for CMI students:

Hostel Amenities A brand-new 42-inch flat-screen TV was procured for the hostel, just in time for the cricket World Cup. The old TV had been around since many of the alumni were students themselves, so this was a much-needed upgrade. Most of the ₹60,000 cost was covered by generous donations from alumni, with the rest coming from the Alumni Association. Special thanks to Tanmoy Chakraborty, Koushik Ragavan, Soumya Banerjee, Pabitra Barik, Raghunath Tewari, Saket Saurabh, Navin Rustagi, and Srinivasan Kannan.

Student Support Loans The Alumni Association helped two undergrad students who had secured admissions to universities in the US and Canada by providing loans of ₹1,00,000 and ₹25,000 to cover their initial moving expenses. These funds were structured as short-term loans to be repaid within their first year of graduate school.

Student Travel Fund A group of alumni—Arnab Kar, Arnab Nayak, Rajesh Chitnis, Pratish Gandhi, Sourabh Nampalliwar, and Srinivasan Kannan—set up a fund to support student travel. They pledged nearly ₹1,00,000 and helped a first-year B.Sc. student attend a summer workshop in Germany by covering ₹27,000 of his expenses.

These efforts showed how the alumni community came together to support students, not just by improving hostel life but also by helping them pursue academic opportunities beyond CMI.
